General Description Operate canal locks on weekends, aid in pasage of whitewater rafts as part of Trust's Concord River whitewater rafting program. Close locks, open wickets to raise water level and send rafts through to next chamber.
Number of Volunteers Needed 20 to 30 people.
Special Training Required Must attend lock tender training on March 22, 2008 at 10:30am or by appointment. Please call to sign up with your April/May availability.
Work Conditions Outdoors.
Level of Responsibility Medium
Special Skills Ability to lift 50+ pounds, ability to climb.
Physical Demands Heavy lifting and pushing, working at heights, near water.
Perks This is an exciting physical opportunity to be a part of the living history of the Pawtucket Canal! You get to operate the historic Lower Locks.

Landscaping

General Description

Help maintain landscaping at various Trust parks & properties: Spalding House, Jollene Dubner Park, Coburn Park, Donahue Park, and others

Number of Volunteers Needed

3 to 4 people

Outdoors – you set your own hours

Alewife (River Herring) Restoration

Alewife Monitor

 

General Description

Help find & count river herring adults going upstream (spring) and juveniles going downstream (summer/fall), take air & water temperatures, and make written observational comments.

Number of Volunteers Needed

20 to 30 people

Time Commitment

1/2 hour per monitoring session - as often as you want over a 6 to 8 week period.

Spring and Summer

Minimal - training session held in spring, summer, and as needed

Outdoors - rain or shine

Some walking, some lifting (clearing of debris in the fish ladder)

General Description

Give input about general design and public art plan. Help review historical research to develop signage for the Greenway. Help review and update ecological inventory.
