Thank you for your interest in our fish monitoring program!  We are excited to have this program up and running after a 15 year hiatus, including the addition of new video technology!

We need six to nine volunteers a day to monitor the alewife at the Centennial Island fish ladder. The more frequent our observations are, the better our data will be.

The season will run from May 3 to June 10, 2017.

The time slots are broken down into four-hour time periods.  We need three monitors for each four-hour time block, but each monitor only needs to count for 10 consecutive minutes (pick any random 10 minutes within your four-hour time slot). If we are fortunate to have enough volunteers to cover hourly monitoring, we will expand the calendar.

To claim a time slot, please email Lisa.

If you need to change your time slot, please email Lisa.

We are also monitoring the fish with an underwater video camera and need volunteers to count fish on the video.  This helps to verify the volunteer sightings, pick up on other species, and count fish at night.

If you are able to help with video monitoring, please let us know.

What’s involved with fish monitoring?

  • Volunteers will be provided information on how to access the ladder.

  • Materials for monitoring are stored in a nearby gatehouse in a small portable file box.  The entrance to the gatehouse is the white door on the small red house in this photo

  • Each monitor will fill out a data sheet for their 10 minutes of monitoring (any random 10 minutes within the four hour time block – please try not to come at the same time each time you monitor).

  • You will count the fish moving UP the ladder (upstream), record your name, the time, and the weather, and put your data sheet back in the box.

  • As of May 10, the best place to look is at the wooden bar in the ladder, just below and to the left the iron grate.  You can see it in the photo below as a straight line, light in color (good contrast).  We added this bar to help control the flow through the viewing area for the camera.

The data you are collecting are incredibly valuable to our partner state and federal agencies. One important reason is that the data will help determine what kind of fish access will be provided at the Talbot Mills Dam in Billerica in the future.

Thank you for helping us document the historic return of alewife to the Concord River. YOU are helping open up access to the largest acreage of optimal fish habitat in all of New England.
