{"id":71926,"date":"2020-03-10T14:14:01","date_gmt":"2020-03-10T18:14:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lowelllandtrust.org\/?page_id=71926"},"modified":"2022-09-20T15:45:18","modified_gmt":"2022-09-20T19:45:18","slug":"red-osier-dogwood","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/lowelllandtrust.org\/flora-fauna-found-in-lowell\/red-osier-dogwood\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Osier Dogwood"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Red Osier Dogwood<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>In sacred pipe ceremonies Native Americans use the <span style=\"color: #008080;\">inner<\/span> bark of red osier dogwood in a tobacco mixture.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4>Along with bright red <a href=\"https:\/\/lowelllandtrust.org\/flora-fauna-fridays\/holly\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">winterberries<\/span> <\/strong><\/a>, have you noticed the red stems of red osier dogwood?\u00a0It&#8217;s another native shrub that catches our eye in the winter landscape.<\/h4>\n<h4>Known as red twig or red osier dogwood, <em>Cornus sericea<\/em> is a multi-stemmed, colonizing shrub most commonly found in wetland areas, such as Clay Pit Brook at <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lowelllandtrust.org\/explore-the-properties\/conservation-land\/hawk-valley-farm\/\">Hawk Valley Farm<\/a><\/span><\/strong>.<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Flowers:<\/strong> Unlike the easily identifiable dogwood tree with it&#8217;s showy, petal-like bracts in spring, this shrub&#8217;s flowers are more inconspicuous. The medium to <strong>dark green leaves<\/strong>, however, look similar to the tree species; opposite, simple, ovate with distinctive veining. They also turn shades of red and purple in the fall.<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Habitat:<\/strong><em> Cornus sericea<\/em> is adaptable and tolerant of wet and dry soil and you\u2019ll usually find it in areas of full sun.<\/h4>\n<h4>Red osier dogwood provides erosion control as well as dense cover for wildlife.<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Wildlife\/pollinators:<\/strong> It&#8217;s a larval host plant to the spring azure butterfly and according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arborday.org\/trees\/treeguide\/TreeDetail.cfm?ItemID=834\">www.arborday.org<\/a>, the berries are eaten by 18+ species of birds including northern flicker, cedar waxwing, wild turkey, and gray catbird.
