Concord River Greenway -
Education
The Concord River Greenway will serve not only as
a resource for recreational, but also for educational purposes. A
historic tour of the area between the Wamesit and Massic Falls has
been developed by and for elementary, middle, and high school
students and teachers in and around the Merrimack River Valley, and
will highlight past and present uses of the river. This will be
designed for adaptation to general visitors to the Lowell National
Historical Park and our city’s many other historical museums and
cultural attractions as well as school audiences who come to the
Tsongas Center and Park.
We will also make a documentary film tracing the
industrial, environmental, and immigration history of the Lower
Concord River and neighborhoods as well as the LP&CT initiative to
build a Greenway, a project that highlights the paradox of economic
decline creating the opportunity for gradual environmental
recovery. The film will be available for purchase by the general
public and teachers, and it will supplement the materials on the
website. Additionally, it will be integrated into Tsongas Center
and UML Graduate School of Education professional development
workshops, such as relevant year-round Teaching American History
sessions and National Endowment for the Humanities “Inventing
America: Lowell and the Industrial Revolution” summer Landmarks
Workshops.
This interactive website, which includes
timelines, maps, and audio and video clips also offers unique
opportunities for learning. Enjoy!
