Entomology Research at West Meadow

Have you ever tracked ants back to their colony?  We have!

We did not expect to see hundreds of ants running from one site to another, but that’s just what we encountered while taking Christina Kwapich, an assistant professor at UMass Lowell, on a tour of our West Meadow conservation property. Christina will be conducting research on insect behavior at West Meadow this fall. She will study ant colonies with a special interest in their nesting behavior and interactions with other insects.

Why West Meadow?  The proximity and varied landscape, especially the sandy pine barren, will offer her students an excellent opportunity to observe and collect insects during their labs. They’ve also offered to help with a stewardship project on-site!  Stay tuned for updates regarding this exciting research.

Which species of ants were we tracking? Find out here.
