Native to eastern North America, this tree is found in environments that other species would find unsuitable, such as acidic, sandy, & low-nutrient soils. It grows into a non-uniform shape, with trunks growing in a slight curve with irregularly shaped bark. The species has high regenerative properties, being able to sprout new shoots if its trunk is cut or damaged by fire. Some individuals produce serotinous cones, which remain closed until exposed to the heat of a fire, allowing seeds to be released into the nutrient-rich conditions that follow.
