Often found in dry, open woods and fields, it forms expanding clumps with deep root systems. Its leaves are trifoliate (three leaflets), grow alternately, and are typically gray-green. Yellow or cream flowers are pea-shaped & give way to inflated seed pods that turn black when ripe. It is a host plant for several butterfly species like Wild Indigo Duskywing.
