Found in many habitats, all parts of the plant produce a white latex sap when cut. Its leaves are sometimes whorled, growing opposite of each other. Its flowers are highly fragrant, pink, purple, or white, followed by fruit follicles that split open in the fall, releasing seeds on parachutes. 450+ insect species feed on this plant, and it is the host plant for monarch butterfly larvae.
