This shrub forms a large taproot that can grow 8 inches thick. Its leaves are alternately arranged leaves are up to 6 inches long and 4 inches wide. Its acorns are egg-shape. It does not tolerate shade and requires a disturbance to remove other plant species so it can receive sunlight. Its the first to recolonize dry sites that have been repeatedly cut-over or burned.
