Found in clearings and at the edge of forests, this species grows in moist soils. It forms short, lateral branches along the central stem. It blooms yellow florets that are cross-pollinated by the wind. The florets drop individually, leaving behind small and leaf-like structures called glumes. The grains range from amber to brown in color. This grass is a food source for many types of insects.
