This tree is in the rose family and not closely related to cherries. Younger trees have thin, smooth, and banded bark. A mature tree has rough and dark gray to black bark. Its fruit are small, reddish-black drupes. It begins to produce fruit around 10 years of age and continues up to 100 years or more. Its seeds are widely dispersed by birds and bears.
