This North American prairie grass is found across the contiguous United States. In the spring, it grows into an upright, roundish mound of bluish-green grass. In July, it initiates flowering stalks, developing burgundy flower spikelets. In the fall, the grass turns into a copper color. It is the host plant for nine butterfly species.
